MACRAMÉ KEYCHAINS
Explore this textile art form that uses knots and ropes to create simple to complex macramé patterns. In this workshop, artist Liz Wagner shares step-by-step instructions on how to make a trio of macramé keychains with cotton rope of different colors (creamy white, blush pink, and blue green). Each style of keychain will involve at least one of three macramé knots: the lark’s head knot, square knot, and double half hitch knot. By knotting the macramé rope in specific ways, three distinct keychains will form, including some with added touches like beading and frayed edges. The final products are three gorgeous and unique macramé keychains that can be proudly displayed on the wall, on a backpack, or given as gifts to friends and family.
Fun Facts
- Macramé began with 13th century Arab weavers. These artisans used decorative fringed knots to secure their woven textiles.
- Almost any rope will work with the art of macramé. Try your hand with hemp, jute, silk, thick yarn, or other fibers to see what happens.
- Belts, hammocks, lampshades and jewelry can all be created with macramé. If you know a few knots and can dream it, you can make it!
- Macramé owls were a staple of home decor in the 1970s. People desired to bring more representation of the natural world into their homes and would handmake home decor.
About the Artist: Liz Wagner
Liz Wagner finds joy in guiding crafters of all ages through the creative process. As a mother of five and kindergarten educator, she delights in the innate and uninhibited creative spirit that young makers bring to the workshop table.
“There is something magical about seeing a macramé knot slide into place. I love starting with a messy nest of rope lengths and then strategically bending and interlocking the rope to watch the pattern form. Those small moments make the art of macramé incredibly satisfying.”
Liz lives in sunny San Diego with her family of 7. She is crazy about her four chickens, gardening, and making something from nothing.
