SHINAH CHANG
GOLD EMBELLISHED BRUSH PEN LETTERING
Shinah is the professional lettering artist behind Crooked Calligraphy, she playfully pens on a daily basis and has built for us a workshop that introduces her beautiful brush pen lettering technique to create a custom holiday party/stationery set. In addition to brush pen lettering, Shinah shares with us her tips for applying gold foil leafing to offer optional embellishments to each custom piece.
This workshop offers the tools, materials and guidance to begin practicing brush lettering or to hone your scripting skills. Shinah carefully covers letters, numbers and embellishments through a 50 minute overview of brush pen lettering. The final project is gorgeous custom stationery that's perfect for hosting a holiday party (think invitations, place cards, menus...), addressing holiday cards, or to take in your very own direction (perhaps framed scripted art for the living room or nursery, or even holiday gift tags for family).
More about our artist... Shinah’s road to becoming a professional creative was a winding one (listen in on our podcast interview below for the full fascinating story!). She grew up loving handwriting but didn’t realize that she could build her love into a career. Instead, she shares that from an early age she focused on education and achieving traditional markers of success, after graduating from Harvard and then NYU Law School she worked for six years as a corporate attorney. At the end of long 12-hour days she’d spend a bit of time sketching lettering doodles late at night. She eventually recognized that something crucial was missing from her life. After a lot of thinking and building up of courage, Shinah quit her high-paying job and started exploring different creative avenues. She took a calligraphy workshop and something clicked. She had finally found her creative passion.
Today, Shinah runs her lettering design business in Los Angeles and works with both big companies and small businesses. She’s taught hundreds of students in her in-person workshops and has worked with companies such as Disney to bring more creativity into the workplace. Shinah truly believes that every person can learn this awesome, practical, expressive skill and bring a little creative happiness into each day!
