EMBELLISHING WITH FLORAL EMBROIDERY
Welcome to our workshop exploring floral hand embroidery. Kristen Gula of Gulush Threads introduces her careful execution of stitches in our workshop video to achieve detailed, layered floral designs that are often described as textural and nearly 3D. Her technique is beautiful! In addition to an overview of floral embroidery, this workshop introduces the technique of embellishing objects using a unique frame known as a Q Snap.
This especially useful tool was developed by artist Monta Lea Kramer to more easily embellish clothing, personal accessories (scarves!), and even home objects (pillows, quilts, table runners, you name it). We are bringing it to our workshop to support a wonderful family-run business AND to introduce a new way of making. A Q Snap frame is wonderful for developing consistent stitches and is ideal for preventing any hoop indentations or fabric burn that one might experience when removing embellished objects from a traditional hoop.
Speaking of small business collaboration, in this workshop we are embroidering an expertly constructed and handsewn linen utility pouch featuring a smoke gray linen exterior and black cotton interior as well as a brass zipper and leather closure. This pouch is gusseted to sit up on its own when full. Each is individually constructed in Ohio by a wonderful team of seamstresses. It's ideal for holding embroidery or any type of crafting supplies.
More about our lead artist: Kristen is a self-taught fiber artist from St. Louis, Missouri who took her love for hand embroidery to the next level by founding Gulush Threads in 2013. She spends her days raising her two little ones with the support of her husband, Danny, in their home in the suburbs of Southern Illinois (a home she shares with four chickens!). Her work travels everywhere with her and - she shares with us - if you are lucky enough to catch her in the wild you will see her hustlin’, usually with needle in hand! Within the past few years, her passion for sharing embroidery with others has evolved from an online presence to a physical one with workshops across the country, DIY embroidery kits & patterns, and now her first book, 200 Embroidered Flowers (an excellent way to keep exploring floral patterns).
