MODULAR ORIGAMI
Origami transforms simple sheets of paper into meditative works of art, blending centuries of history, design, and storytelling into every fold. In this workshop, Julie leads us through the step-by-step instruction to create five uniquely different modular origami shapes for a total of 8-12 finished pieces. Once you’ve learned to build each custom design, add varying accents to your pieces including gold, wood and sparkle jewelry beads, add a gilded paint edging as a final step.
In this tutorial, we’ll work with Chiyogami Japanese paper, a hand-printed paper with vibrant patterns and a rich cultural legacy. Originating in the Edo period (1603–1868), Chiyogami was created using woodblock printing to adorn kimonos, gifts, and everyday objects. Its intricate motifs—ranging from natural elements to folklore-inspired designs—bring a timeless, artisanal beauty to your origami creations.
WAYS TO SHOWCASE
Traditionally used for decoration, ceremonial offerings, or playful toys, origami has also inspired innovations in mathematics, engineering, and even space exploration.
The ornament you create can be displayed anywhere indoors (away from moisture). Popular ways to showcase your creation include:
- Hanging on a holiday tree
- Displaying on walls or in windows
- Adorning doorknobs or light fixtures
- Using as a charming rearview mirror decoration
AN INSPIRING HISTORY
- The Legend of 1,000 Paper Cranes: In Japanese tradition, folding 1,000 cranes is said to grant a wish, symbolizing hope and healing.
- No Cutting or Glue: Traditional origami uses a single square of paper—no cuts, glue, or markings required. Our modular origami takes this technique a step further, we incorporate embellishments and glue in our final pieces.
- Origami in Space: NASA engineers use origami principles to fold massive solar panels compactly so they can unfold in orbit.
Bring the timeless beauty of origami into your home, folding centuries of Japanese artistry into every creation.
About the Artist: Julie Z.X.
Julie Z.X. is the founder and designer behind Kamyi.Art, a paper art and design studio based in San Diego. She discovered her passion for paper crafts as a child and later studied in Tokyo during college, where she was inspired by traditional origami and washi paper. This experience led her to develop a unique approach to origami jewelry design. Founded in 2020, Kamyi.Art Origami Designs translates centuries-old folding practices into wearable art.
Working from her San Diego studio, Julie creates each piece entirely by hand, ensuring every design is one-of-a-kind. Her work has gained recognition at over 80 curated shows across California, with pieces now held in museum and botanical garden gift shops nationwide. Central to her practice is the belief that "handmade is the new luxury"—bridging traditional art with contemporary design as an alternative to mass production.
When not folding paper or vending at markets, Julie likes to watch anime, model for her photography friends, try out new restaurants, and plan her next adventure abroad.
