Build Your Own: Long-Handle Brooms

Purchase additional bundles of broomcorn to make even more hand-held or full-size brooms from our featured workshops. This 2.5-pound bundle is available in natural, black, or rainbow colors and is enough broomcorn to make roughly eight handheld brooms or two long-handled brooms. 

This bundle of broomcorn is ideal if you prefer a more robust look for your broom, want to add some color to your broom designs, or if you simply want to keep making more brooms. These bundles work for any of our broom-making workshops, Naked Turkey Wing, Woven Whisk, or Long-Handled Brooms.

Materials in this broomcorn bundle include:

• 2.5 pounds of extra broom corn in your choice of Natural, Black, or Rainbow

RAINBOW BROOMCORN
The rainbow broomcorn colors come in a bundle of red, dark green, royal blue, purple, and natural (0.5 pounds each). Try combining the hand-dyed colors together or with natural or black broomcorn for a truly enchanting broom. 

Using an environmentally-friendly, non-toxic dye, each batch of the colored broomcorn is hand-dyed by the Meckleys of Meckley Brooms—a family-run business dating back over 100 years. 

MORE ABOUT BROOMCORN
Broomcorn is a tall plant derived from the sorghum family and is distinctive because of its long and fibrous seed branches. Those stiff, sticky branches are perfect for broom-making as they catch and hold on to dust and dirt while you sweep. The plant is cultivated, harvested, sorted, and can also be dyed as an added embellishment. The black and rainbow broomcorn feature a coating of black dye which can transfer to your hands when handling the stocks. The dye washes easily from the skin with soap and water. Use caution if handling while wearing light-colored clothing.

This tarred nylon twine has a tackier surface than regular nylon, making it an ideal choice for securing the inner bristle on long-handle brooms. Pair with your choice of broomcorn, cording, broomcorn stalks, and handle to create your own unique broom designs.
