Fluid Alcohol Ink Workshop

In this workshop, artist Ashley Mahlberg shares with us how to build abstract, organic art using ink + alcohol. When applied to the cradle board with air or heat, the ink dances across the surface creating beautiful movement. When colors are blended together, the result is playful yet sophisticated as the inks bump up against and spread into one another. Fluid art is known for its vibrant and bold colors, Ashley shares how to apply these brightly hued inks and also how to tame their final look with shading, contrast and motion.

A key component of this workshop is the richly pigmented alcohol inks that are applied using drops and sprays of additional isopropyl alcohol. A heat gun helps to quickly move the pigment around the surface and a paintbrush allows for more expertly placed dots and shading. By choosing gesso ‘blocks’, this diptych becomes free standing art built as a pair or set for the home. Beautiful on a shelf, mantle or table, its free standing nature means you can move them around as art objects or hang on a wall. They’re beautiful in a collage! Ashley is an abstract artist and graphic designer residing in the Pacific Northwest with her husband, son and two pups. Passionate about sharing her love of the Washington coast, her paintings mimic organic forms, flow and dynamic color palettes found in her everyday surroundings.

Welcome to an introduction to watercolor and gouache with artist Sarah Simon. In this workshop, Sarah teaches color blending theory, color gradient ‘washes’ - and using a live bouquet for inspiration - a detailed study of building watercolor florals from the ground up. Once you’ve completed your bouquet, Sarah introduces Florence, her favorite flower girl and you’ll finish your piece by customizing your own illustrated muse. Sarah finds inspiration in the ever-blooming variety of textures and colors in her urban garden of the Pacific Northwest where she creates lush watercolor paintings in a unique, artistic style that has captured an international following.

Painting the Sky Workshop

In this workshop, we tap into the most creative and colorful versions of ourselves as we explore how to paint the sky in Stefanie Bales’ signature style. We’ve thoughtfully collaborated with Stefanie of Stefanie Bales Fine Art to bring you expert-led instruction paired with inspiring and empowering creative freedom so you can uncover what’s in your own sky.

Stefanie walks us through all the steps to create a light-filled acrylic seascape and sky painting. You’ll be introduced to Stefanie’s favorite tools and materials for making, and you’ll explore all of the artistic benefits of working with her curated color palette. Stefanie also allows us to discuss and dive into various brush techniques and tips for organic mark making, as well as thoughtful instruction on working through the process of building out color layers. In the end, you’ll have a rich understanding of new painting techniques and a stunning canvas featuring a one-of-kind rendition of a light and cloud filled sky in beautiful pastels.
