BOTANICAL TEXTILES:
ECO-PRINTING &
BORO STITCHING
Welcome to a detailed workshop in eco-printing, and specifically bundle dyeing and hapazome hammer printing. This is a hands-on workshop where nature meets slow stitching! Once florals are beautifully captured on fabric through mordanting and transfer techniques, this workshop explores slow stitching in the boro technique.
Eco printing is a botanical dyeing technique that uses flowers and leaves to create beautiful, natural prints on fabric. This workshop explores two different eco printing techniques:
Steam Printing (Bundle Dyeing) – Learn how to arrange fresh botanicals on fabric, bundle them tightly, and steam them to release their natural pigments.
Hammer Printing (Hapazome) – Discover the joy (and stress relief!) of flower pounding, using hammers to transfer the colors and shapes of plants directly onto fabric.
Once the prints are set and revealed, students will select their favorite pieces to create boro-inspired coasters. Boro is a traditional Japanese mending style that uses layered textiles and visible hand stitching to create both beauty and utility. You’ll learn beginner friendly hand-stitching techniques to piece and embellish your coasters with your eco-printed fabrics.
You'll leave with a set of unique, handmade coasters and a newfound appreciation for the beauty of botanicals and the magic of slow crafting.
