Handwoven Cane Workshop with Lindsey Campbell

LINDSEY CAMPBELL

HANDWOVEN CANE

This workshop explores an ancient weaving craft called caning, where caned decor will be added to a cylindrical vessel. Artist and instructor Lindsey Campbell will introduce the materials, including a soy blend candle, strips of cane, and a few helpful tools that make this handwoven cane workshop beginner-friendly. She will cover the unique weaving sequence, which includes vertical, horizontal, and diagonal directions. You can choose to leave a raw edge on the finished product or add a border with thicker cane, which is included in the kit. Once you have your handwoven cane candle, you’ll want to start caning on every vessel you can find!

HISTORY OF CANING

Caning, also known as 'wicker,' is a popular method used to weave seating for chairs. It has a rich history dating back to ancient Egyptian times, as evidenced by artifacts such as King Tutankhamun's daybed. Caning experienced its peak of popularity when it was introduced to Europe in the 17th century. This technique involves utilizing the glossy skin from the trunk of the Rattan palm, which is native to Southeast Asia. The palm stalks are delicately stripped into thin lengths and then woven to create a solid, flat surface. Throughout history, the technique has remained relatively unchanged.

HANDWOVEN CANE HOME DECOR

Beyond caning around a candle, crafters can branch out and hand-weave cane around any type of vessel as long as it has straight sides. Caning is also used for weaving larger flat projects like seats or benches that can, in turn, become cane decorations for the home. Smaller home decor projects like drink or jewelry trays can also be adorned with woven cane.

About the Artist: Lindsey Campbell

Lindsey Campbell stands as the artistic mind and educator behind Hello Hydrangea. Her weaving journey began with ingeniously creating her own loom using pins on a simple picture frame. She described the experience as enchanting and almost magical when she embarked on weaving endeavors. Following that initial project, Lindsey's exploration into the realm of weaving has encompassed a diverse range of expressions, spanning tapestries, rugs, furniture, garments, and baskets.

However, Lindsey's passion extends beyond her personal weaving endeavors. Through her array of online courses, published works, and hands-on workshops, her mission is to make weaving approachable and gratifying for individuals of all skill levels. Her guiding principle, "Create for Yourself," invites all creators to embrace the artistic journey, regardless of whether their creations are shared with the world or remain a private delight.

Lindsey resides in the serene expanse of the Sonoran desert in Arizona, USA, alongside her husband, two sons, a dog, a cat, and a flock of ten chickens. In addition to crafting, Lindsey manages a bustling household, indulges in reading, partakes in CrossFit training, and enjoys small-scale homesteading within her suburban backyard.
