Join master carver Ahmad Khalid Rauofi in a unique Nuristani Chip Carving Workshop, where you’ll learn the ancient Afghan technique of Nuristani chip carving. With a 5,000-year history rooted in Afghanistan's Nuristan province, this art form uses a standard single-bevel chisel (13-16mm) rather than a traditional Western chip carving knife.
In this ongoing class, you’ll begin by mastering foundational designs on softwood. Under Ahmad’s expert instruction, you’ll carve the lid of one wooden circular box, perfect for storing jewelry or keepsakes. Each inlay design carries its own meaning, and you’ll delve into the rich cultural significance behind the chip carving pattern Setareh (ستاره) you create. Whether new to carving or looking to refine your skills, this workshop offers a hands-on experience that honors an ancient tradition.
